THE BRIDGE

“The Bridge” at Tynemouth Station is an exciting exhibition space situated in the heart of one of our Metro stations. It is the central section of the bridge which links the two platforms together.

The very first exhibition in The Bridge was “My Blue Heaven” by Gilly Rogers (an Art in Context MA student at Sunderland University) in 1995.

Since then, a wide variety of exhibitions and installations have been on display here – most created specifically for this unusual and experimental space. To date (April 2008) there have been over 40 exhibitions.

Some have been by well-established artists such as Julie Livsey, whilst others have been by newly qualified artists starting on their careers like Stephanie Imbeau, with “Inside”.

As well as work by individual artists, there have been group projects, for example North Tyneside Arts Studio’s “Heads of Grey Matter” and “Lii Yu” or “Jumping Carp” by pupils attending the Children’s University.

The newest exhibition in The Bridge is entitled “Flight”. This is by Annette Chevallier, who is a locally based artist and lives in Tynemouth. The idea for the work began when Annette was walking across the bridge on her way home from a peace rally in Newcastle at the start of the Iraq war.

“Flight” is like a three dimensional painting. A swirl of colour greets the eye, as 300 origami peace cranes fill the enclosed space of The Bridge as though in flight formation. A few have escaped and shelter high up under the Station’s glass canopy.

The exhibition is open 24 hours a day from now until the beginning of July
